Bringing classical music at the ARD to the 21st century

20 years ago, record companies stopped giving away records to radio stations. Instead they started delivering audio, images and metadata as files via the so-called music promotion network (MPN). Major record companies then founded Phononet around 2000 to distribute music in non physical form (mostly to public and private radio stations).

In order to manage these files, ARD Sternpunkt began bringing and delivering pop music tracks and metadata centrally. ARD and DAVID Systems introduced new applications and interfaces. The goal was to enable journalists to browse, listen and download/transfer (via replication) popular music within their local production system. Thus, they had easy access to all newly released pop-music, covers and booklets from major record labels.

Over the years, more services were added to the system. For example: the exchange of concerts between EBU members, the digitalization of existing music (RAImport), Medas Music Upload (MMU) and more.

To be able to improve the user experience, you need to understand the user. You should never only rely on your own intuitions or own knowledge, as you may have a biased opinion on products, features and workflows. A diversity of perspectives always brings value to a decision, especially when it comes to UX.

What’s the problem?

We – the designers and developers – at DAVID Systems are not our customers, who are editors, journalists, schedulers, moderators. That is why we can only really understand their needs, opinions and troubles when they are voiced.

Sharing Stories with the ARD WeConnect System

A few years ago, we were challenged with how to align multimedia stories across the ARD Network. In response, DAVID along with partners developed the WeConnect System.

The WeConnect project actually started much earlier with the idea that a story in a newsroom is a collection of “traditional” Radio items such as text and audio, and “new” items such as images, video, and data. So why not put everything under one umbrella, with a vendor independent interface and modern technical standards?

I’m now pleased to share that after several years of planning, developing and testing, the ARD WeConnect System went live on the night of the 1st of December 2020.
